Different types of radiation have different effects on tissue. In order to account for these differences, the absorbed dose is multiplied by a radiation weighting factor. This factor is dependent upon the type and amount of radiation involved. Absorbed dose is a dose quantity which is the measure of the energy deposited in matter by ionizing radiation per unit mass. Absorbed dose is used in the calculation of dose uptake in living tissue in both radiation protection, and radiology.
